The items you send down your garbage disposal can leave unpleasant scents behind. If you smell something icky emitting from your garbage disposal, you may try to run water and the garbage disposal to get rid of the scent. If that does not do the trick, you may find yourself wondering how to proceed. Here are three different techniques you can use to get rid of any unpleasant smells coming from your garbage disposal.

Baking Soda and Vinegar

One of the ways that you can remove icky smells from your garbage disposal is to use baking soda and vinegar. Pour one cup of baking soda down your garbage disposal. It is best if the disposal is dry and has not been used in a couple of hours. Once the baking soda has settled, pour one to two cups of white vinegar down the drain. The mixture will begin to fizzle, which helps to clean the garbage disposal. Once the fizzing action dies out, rinse your sink with water and the smell should be gone.

Lemons, Oranges or Grapefruit

In some cases, the smell coming from the garbage disposal may be trapped on the disposal blades. One of the ways to remove this scent is to slice up any type of citrus, including lemons, limes, oranges or grapefruit, turn on cold water and turn on the garbage disposal. The chopped up citrus helps to remove any trapped food particles and the juice helps to remove icky scents and replace them with pleasant ones.

Bleach

If a smell still is lingering in your garbage disposal, you can pour 1/2 to one cup of bleach down the drain. This will not only help to remove any smells from the garbage disposal but helps to remove scents from the pipes below the garbage disposal. Bleach can be damaging to your garbage disposal and pipes, so it should only be used sparingly and as a last resort for removing unwanted scents.

If you have a smelly garbage disposal, you may not enjoy spending time in your kitchen. But, this is not the only reason you may not like to spend time in your kitchen. If your kitchen is too small or the layout does not work for you, the kitchen may not be the heart of your home. If you are in the market for apartments in Charlotte, North Carolina and are looking for a beautiful, open kitchen, check us out at Ashford Green. Stop by today to tour our complex.

When you move into Charlotte apartments with wooden floors, you want to make sure you understand the appropriate cleaning methods. Wooden floors differ from other flooring materials because you need to take measures to avoid water damage or other complications. Fortunately, there are easy ways to keep your floors clean and limit the risk of damage from water.

Sweep the Floors

The easiest method to keep your wood floors clean is regular sweeping. When you sweep the floors, you remove small rocks and dirt from the surface. It makes the floors more comfortable to walk on and it removes any pebbles that may damage the wood.

You want to sweep every few days to remove any excess dirt, stones or other problems. It is particularly important when you have sand, salt or other small rocks that come in with your shoes during colder weather.

Dry Mop the Floors

After you sweep the floors, you want to dry mop the floors. Use a dry mop or a dust mop to remove the dust from the floors. In most cases, you will use the dust mop or the dry mop after you finish sweeping to avoid scratches from small pebbles and rocks. You can also use a static mop with disposable cloths if you are unsure about the appropriate type of mop for your goals. By removing the dust and dirt via sweeping and dry mopping, you will not need to spend time working on traditional mopping every few days or even every week.

Wet Mop the Floors

The final part of keeping your wood floors clean is wet mopping. Use a mop of your choice and an appropriate cleaner for the type of wood on the floor. Fill a sink or a bucket with water and the cleaner. Follow any instructions on the cleaner to determine the appropriate dilution. Place the mop in the water and then wring it out until it is damp. You do not want it to be dripping, since that may damage your floors. A damp mop is ideal to remove excess grit, dirt and stuck-on materials from your floors. Use the mop over the floors every two weeks to maintain cleanliness without risking your floors. When you finish mopping, use a fan to dry the floors quickly or use a dry cloth to pull up excess water.

Keeping your wood floors clean is a process. You want to remove dirt and stones on a regular basis, but you can keep it clean with a dry mop on most occasions. To learn more about our available rentals, contact us today.
